Beyond Just Database Provisioning

Advantages of database orchestration, including data governance, enhanced privacy and security, and simplified infrastructure through reduction of VM sprawl.

While Windocks implementations are primarily purchased for database administrators to streamline provisioning of dev and test database environments, other IT and data functions also realize advantages of database orchestration in the areas of:

  • Data governance
  • Enhanced privacy and security
  • Simplified infrastructure through reduction of VM sprawl

A quick overview follows, and we’d be happy to schedule a consultation with you to dive in further on these points.

Data Governance

Data governance involves tracking and auditing the movement of data across the enterprise.  One potential data movement vector that is often overlooked is the provisioning of development, test, analytics, and other lower-level or non-production database environments. Windocks provides an automated, auditable, and repeatable process for the provisioning of complete database environments using standard Docker CLI commands and APIs. Windocks configurations can integrate with source control systems such as Git, as well as build systems such as Jenkins and Bamboo.  This automation removes the risks associated with ad hoc database environment provisioning, and bespoke script development.  We have a white paper on how Windocks enhances data governance and would be happy to schedule a consultation.

Data Privacy

Database environment provisioning typically requires that personally identifiable information (PII) is protected.  With Windocks it is possible to mask sensitive data, and with a new capability, to generate synthetic datasets of any desired size with the same statistical distributions as the production data.  If you are interested in evaluating this new synthetic data capability, we are running a beta program.

Reducing VM Sprawl

A big issue with the traditional VM-based test environments is the "VM sprawl", often consuming significant storage, compute, and licensing costs. Windocks customers streamline their test infrastructures by utilizing Windocks zero-copy cloning to reduce disk space, and containers to reduce compute.  Windocks unique ability to run Windows SQL Server database containers on a single Windows VM can also drive lower licensing costs.  A simplified analysis is on our blog.  Contact us if you are interested in walking through a more comprehensive ROI spreadsheet with us.
